Due Monday May 4th:
Molar Mass Calculation worksheet on Google Classroom Points for the Week: Attend Talk via Zoom: 10 points per talk (2 talks this week) Molar Mass Calculation assignment submitted via Google Docs: 5 points Office Hours: 5 points for 20 minutes of talking over assignments or going over challenge options. A = 30 points B = 25 points C= 22 points Make sure you're checking google classroom regularly (once per day) for all of your assignments and deadlines. All of the deadlines are given on the assignment! Today's Guest: Today we will hear from Dr. Lynn Waterhouse, who is a research biologist at Shedd's Daniel P. Haerther Center for Conservation and Research. Before coming to Shedd, she completed a Ph.D. in biological oceanography at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UCSD. As part of her Ph.D., she worked on Nassau groupers (a type of fish) in the Cayman Islands with REEF (Reef Environmental Education Foundation) and the Cayman Island Department of the Environment. She also completed the first stock assessment of white seabass for the State of California with Dr. Juan Valero of CAPAM (Center for Advancement of Population Assessment and Methodology). Lynn's research focuses on mesopredators in the Bahamas and Caribbean, specifically population assessments of groupers and snappers (both types of fish). She is working with stakeholders (people who have a vested interest in a place) in the Bahamas, hopefully completing assessments of how many animals there are of species of concern, starting with the Nassau groupers, with the goal of making a sustainable fisheries management plan. She co-teaches a college course in the Bahamas aboard the Shedd's research vessel the R/V Coral Reef II.

All of the deadlines are given on the assignment! Today's Guest: Today we have Dr. Greg Gemmen joining us! Greg grew up in Michigan surfing on Lake Michigan, and always had a relentless curiosity for nature and how man-made machines work. He was extremely fortunate to have a truly excellent physics teacher in high school, the late Mr. James Jipping, who instilled in him a real passion for learning physics and the rigorous mathematical and geometric thinking that it demands. After majoring in physics and math at Hope College, he chose UCSD for graduate school so he could surf every day…it also helped that UCSD boasts a truly excellent physics department. Greg did his Ph.D. work in the single molecule physics of DNA utilizing optical tweezers. Since finishing his PhD, Greg has worked as an R&D engineer/scientist in biotech instrumentation at several different companies around San Diego with specialties in microscopy, optics, microfluidics, precision motion control, and the like. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, camping, and rock climbing with his wife Bianka and dog Nigel. Due Sunday:

She spoke about Careers in Applied Chemistry - from high altitude climbing to COVID-19 testing. She went to school in Oregon, where she worked with monkeys during an undergraduate degree in neuroscience. She then walked dogs for a year in San Francisco before studying high altitude acclimatization drugs for climbers. After that, she decided to get a PhD in biomedical sciences at UCSD in genetic adaptations in high altitude populations. Today she is volunteering her time to run COVID-19 tests on healthcare workers, using skills from her PhD studies. She was really excited to meet all of you! First, I hope you are all well, and that your families are safe. I know that this is a strange time, and isn't truly "distance learning", but rather trying to keep learning in really difficult circumstances without any of the things we would normally have on short notice. That being said, here's the plan for THIS week: This week, you have a certain number of points available. You can choose how you get them based on how accessible the internet is for you at any given time, and how much time you have to dedicate to school. Week 1 points: 35=A 30=B 25=C Attending guest talk: 4 points per talk you sign in and stay for OR watch and leave an audio reflection on (recorded and placed on google drive or Padlet - must be an audio or video file to receive credit), 1 point for leaving a written response to the talk. https://padlet.com/jlyman1/v7uouzf6wzr595ed Attending office hours and actually talking through projects or problems with with Ms. Lyman or Mr. Chin for 20 minutes: 5 points Responding to a shared article on Newsela: 2 points each article, two articles possible. Project Progress Goal: 3 points for this week because it's just choosing the project. Guest scientist video: 1 point - pre-watch and add any questions you might have as a blog post comment below that post! |
