Greg grew up in Michigan surfing on Lake Michigan, and always had a relentless curiosity for nature and how man-made machines work. He was extremely fortunate to have a truly excellent physics teacher in high school, the late Mr. James Jipping, who instilled in him a real passion for learning physics and the rigorous mathematical and geometric thinking that it demands. After majoring in physics and math at Hope College, he chose UCSD for graduate school so he could surf every day…it also helped that UCSD boasts a truly excellent physics department. Greg did his Ph.D. work in the single molecule physics of DNA utilizing optical tweezers. Since finishing his PhD, Greg has worked as an R&D engineer/scientist in biotech instrumentation at several different companies around San Diego with specialties in microscopy, optics, microfluidics, precision motion control, and the like. Outside of work, he enjoys hiking, camping, and rock climbing with his wife Bianka and dog Nigel.
