Today's Guest: Alex Hangsterfer will be talking about her winding path to the geological collections and a deep dive into the ocean! She is the geological collections manager at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO). She received her BA from Roger Williams University in Environmental Chemistry and Biology, with a minor in philosophy. She received her Masters from SIO, with a focus in methane hydrate biogeochemistry. She was hired in June 2009 to happily manage the Geological Collections. She is now an x-ray technician, operating a machine called an XRF core scanner, which supports multi-disciplinary research projects with students, post-docs, and researchers from academic and governmental institutions across the world. First, I hope you are all well, and that your families are safe. I know that this is a strange time, and isn't truly "distance learning", but rather trying to keep learning in really difficult circumstances without any of the things we would normally have on short notice. That being said, here's the plan for THIS week: This week, you have a certain number of points available. You can choose how you get them based on how accessible the internet is for you at any given time, and how much time you have to dedicate to school. Week 1 points: 35=A 30=B 25=C Attending guest talk: 4 points per talk you sign in and stay for OR watch and leave an audio reflection on (recorded and placed on google drive or Padlet - must be an audio or video file to receive credit), 1 point for leaving a written response to the talk. https://padlet.com/jlyman1/v7uouzf6wzr595ed Attending office hours and actually talking through projects or problems with with Ms. Lyman or Mr. Chin for 20 minutes: 5 points Responding to a shared article on Newsela: 2 points each article, two articles possible. Project Progress Goal: 3 points for this week because it's just choosing the project. Guest scientist video: 1 point - pre-watch and add any questions you might have as a blog post comment below that post! Today we are preparing for reaction power talks. Don't forget to use your rubric to determine what your score would be! Practice, practice, practice! You will be randomly assigned a reaction tomorrow, so be prepared to talk through it.

Don't forget to write balanced compounds and to check for diatomic molecules! Remember: Br I N Cl H O F Hello everyone! I'm sad to miss class today, but I'll be back tomorrow! There are some very important things happening Friday: We'll be working with the 7th grade to do some water testing and learning stations! They need to know what they will be testing in the lab and more, so you have to get ready to share information at different stations. Today you will work with your assigned partner (see below) to teach 7th graders about a pollutant, nutrient, or aspect of water you are assigned. What to make: You and your partner will need to design and add information to an interactive table activity for 7th graders! You will have 8 minutes to fill before the 7th graders will rotate to a new station (there are 6 total stations). Your station must have: information about your pollutant or nutrient being shared in an interactive way. Example: make a model with them of how your nutrient or pollutant might interact with the environment (where does it come from, where does it go, why is it good/bad?), check for understanding with a kahoot or exit slip! Think about using models, hands-on demos (what chemicals could you show them in real life?), short interactive ideas, cool pictures, fun slideshows, short skits. Remember, you only have 8 minutes to teach them something and have them somehow demonstrate that they've learned it! Someone in each group should make a sign for the table to indicate what is happening at that station! Share research notes with Ms. Lyman on Google Docs! You have an extension on your film drafts until the end of next week!
